Because we believe that all theology is practical and all practice is theological, we’re here as a humble attempt to simply connect faithful theology to everyday life.

What Happens After We Die?

What Happens After We Die?

What happens after we die? Do we enter into soul sleep? Do we go to Purgatory? Do we see God?

This question is common among Christians and non-Christians alike. As always, we turn to the Scriptures.

There are many verses that hint at an answer, but the three passages below seem to provide the clearest explanation. Namely, that for the Christian, when our physical bodies die our soul goes to be with the Lord immediately.

Luke 23:43 And he [Jesus] said to him [the thief on the cross], “Truly I tell you, today you will be with me in paradise.”

2 Corinthians 5:8 In fact, we are confident, and we would prefer to be away from the body and at home with the Lord.

Philippians 1:23-24 I am torn between the two. I long to depart and be with Christ — hich is far better — ut to remain in the flesh is more necessary for your sake.

These verses do not nullify the promise of resurrected and redeemed bodies for God's people when Christ returns (1 Thessalonians 4:13-17). However, until Jesus does return, God's people will enjoy Christ and the benefits that are in him immediately after death.
